Ms Engelin Teh, SC was admitted to the Singapore bar in 1979 after graduation from the University of Singapore with an Honours degree in Bachelor of Laws. She was appointed Senior Counsel on 10 January 1998. The appointment of Senior Counsel, Singapore's equivalent of Queen's Counsel in Britain, was made by the Selection Committee which includes the Chief Justice and the Attorney-General. Engelin's forte is litigation and arbitration work with particular emphasis on the following areas:- - International commercial transactions and other contract claims, including international joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions
- Banking claims with focus on mortgage claims, cheque forgery, loan recovery (collaterised and uncollaterised) and claims on trust receipts, letters of credit, guarantees, debentures and other forms of banking documentation
- Corporate litigation, including schemes of arrangement, minority oppression, shareholders' disputes, rights and liabilities of directors, breach of fiduciary duties and matters involving the Singapore Companies Act
- Claims on all forms of customer agreements in relation to securities and futures
- Building and construction claims including claims against developers, architects, engineers, main contractors and sub-contractors
- Employment disputes, including employment contracts and collective agreements
- Remedies in public and administrative law relating to breach of natural justice
- Medical negligence claims
- Matrimonial matters, including divorce, custody and maintenance claims and division of matrimonial assets
- Factoring claims
- Hire-purchase and equipment leasing claims
- Intellectual property claims
- Real estate related claims
- Receivership, insolvency and judicial management
- Credit card claims
- Insurance claims
- Negligence and other tortious claims, including professional negligence claims
- Defamation claims
- Family disputes
As part of the litigation process, pre-litigation courses of action and pre-emptive remedies including all forms of prohibitive and mandatory injunctions would follow. Engelin is also substantially involved in work relating to banking and corporate matters. In these areas, her main portfolio consists of the following:- - Preparation of and advising on agreements, acquisitions and sales of businesses and shares in different industries, including advising on the provisions of the Takeover Code
- Preparation of and advising on commercial agreements entered into by corporate entities including distributorship and agency agreements, management agreements, consultancy agreements and service contracts, licensing agreements, assignments and novations of contracts
- Preparation of and advising on joint venture, partnership and shareholders' agreements and other similar arrangements
As part of providing service to clients, Engelin has conducted various seminars and in-house training programmes for banks and financial institutions, with emphasis on banking, corporate and commercial litigation and also on the practice and procedure of real property and conveyancing. As a qualified arbitrator, Engelin has worked extensively on international commercial claims as well as construction and building matters. Engelin is a fellow of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators (SIA), the Singapore Institute of Directors and the Academy of Law and sits on the panel of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre. She has assisted in the conduct of the Entry Course for the SIA and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIA) and also the conduct of the International Special Fellowship Course organised by the CIA in association with the SIA. Her area of practice extends to intellectual property and she is a member of the Asian Patent Attorneys Association (Singapore Group). She is also a member of the Inter-Pacific Bar Association and was an appointed tutor for the Postgraduate Law Course conducted by the Board of Legal Education of Singapore.
